Purpose. We hear the word plenty. People across the globe search for it, many elusively. For many, it can become a struggle and lead to anxiety because they can’t figure it out, or are unable to elucidate it and act accordingly. What amplifies this feeling is hearing others talk so effusively about living in purpose. There are people who know without question what they were born to do and achieve and just get on with it, leaving others feeling perplexed and perhaps more unfulfilled than they would ordinarily feel. It is said, when we are doing what we are meant to do, we want for nothing, and there is a certain solace to be found in that adage.
I believe we all have a purpose. Unearthing it can be difficult, and the search may seem like it will never end. Sometimes it’s as simple as discovering your gift, talent, what you would do if money wasn’t an object, and sharing it. But as sure as the sun radiates light, it exists.
For me, life is about getting the balance right between its components – mind, body and spirit. This hasn’t happened overnight, and I’ve been a long time coming to this point. As part of the spirit component, which involves serving others as much as ourselves, helping people to heal and feel contented and relaxed using Reiki felt like a natural progression once I discovered the benefits of self-treatment on a regular basis. I loved the feel of the energy, the warm buzz I got from it, and how it made me relaxed and meditative. It became a true blessing in my life, and one I appreciate the longer I’ve been on the Reiki journey. There’s also the sense of gratitude i feel from giving Reiki, for being able to passing this gift on to people who deeply enjoyed the experience.
So you can place me in the category of people saying, “I think I may have found my purpose”. It’s a nice place to be, and I imagine the feeling is different for each of us when they fall into, living in purpose. Some will get an intense feeling of “This is right”, some will glow, some will feel as though they were born to do what they’ve chosen, and others will be doing it without even knowing they are dwelling in purpose.
While I have established Serenity Now Reiki Relaxation & Harmony (despite the name coming to me effortlessly), there was no lightbulb moment or flash of enlightenment to say “This is your purpose, you were born to do this”. It evolved as time passed. I knew early on I wanted to practise Reiki, following a group session I took part in, where we took turns giving and receiving Reiki, but didn’t know where it would lead. That was more than five years ago. Ten years ago, I had no idea that I would be practising Reiki now, nor have experienced the variety of jobs I did in that time. You can manifest your destiny but there will always be unknowns and unplanned interruptions, deviations or diversions.
Hence, I’m just following the path, and trying to surrender to life as it unfolds. We think we are in control, when in reality we aren’t over most of it. We can control aspects of our life – what we eat, our footy team, the movie we watch, the music we enjoy – but much of it is out of our hands.
Perhaps the secret is to take purpose as a day-at-a-time proposition. Just for today, my purpose is serving. And it matters not if you repeat the same mantra daily for years. Live your purpose daily, even it changes with each dawn of a new day. Also remember: if you don’t find your purpose in this lifetime, you’ll have another shot next time.
Yours in serenity, gratitude and wishes granted.
